The day? Saturday October 25, 2025. The weather? Rainy or maybe sunny or wait give it a minute now it’s hail. The place? Sage 1 Abortion (it rhymes) flex double.
I was so excited for this weekend. I hadn’t seen my parents in so long. Since reading period, even. Two whole weeks. Little did I know how quickly my joy would dissipate into mist, joining that which lies over campus like a blanket but made of mist.
When my roommate told me he would need the room from 12:34 to 12:41 I was okay. Happy, even, for him. He’s been lonely. But lo and behold, I was betrayed.
I thought nothing of the size twelve-and-a-half sock on our doorknob. I entered my room at 12:42, well within my legal rights. And made direct eye contact with my dad.
My father.
The man who birthed me.
“Oh, uh, hi,” he said to me, before awkwardly walking out to the parking lot to meet my mom in the car.
The tension between me and my roommate was palpable. I almost even palped it.
“How could you,” I said to roommate, betrayed.
“Wait was that your ex?” he asked.
I stared at him.
“My bad bro, I met him last night and we kinda hit it off so I invited him over today.”
I ran out of the room crying. I’d always guessed my dad was gay, but I guess it took the rainbow for him to be comfortable in his sexuality. I’m proud of him.
I’m not proud of my roommate.
